Marc Overmars reveals he is on Arsenal shortlist

Marc Overmars claims Arsenal have drawn up a shortlist of candidates for a new director of football role and he is among the names on it.

The Gunners reportedly want to create a new role at the club to take charge of transfers and oversee the club’s footballing ethos.

It comes with the club’s hierarchy under increasing pressure to make changes amid a disastrous run of results and sense the club is growing stale under Arsene Wenger.

Overmars, who spent three years at Arsenal and won the double under Wenger in 1998, is among those being considered according to reports. The 44-year-old is currently the director of football at Dutch club Ajax.

‘I know the club pretty well and I have always kept in touch with Arsenal,’ Overmars revealed.

‘As a player I had the ambition to play in Europe (outside the Netherlands). It might be an option in the future.

‘I think there is a list with names, and I’m on it. It’s not strange since I’ve had a good time at Arsenal. But I’ve just signed a new contract at Ajax.’

How Wenger views the creation of the role is unclear. The Frenchman has worked alone during his two decades at the club and may struggle to share power with a director of football.

However with Wenger virtually certain to depart in the coming few years, a director of football could ensure a sense of continuity when that time comes.
