Match Preview: England and Argentina Set for Blockbuster World Cup Semi-final

England will face old rivals Argentina in a mouth-watering 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, with a place in the final against Spain at stake.

The Three Lions are just one win away from reaching their first men’s World Cup final since lifting the famous trophy at Wembley in 1966. It is also another opportunity for Thomas Tuchel’s side to end years of heartbreak after falling short in recent major tournaments.

England reached the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup and the finals of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, but failed to win the title on each occasion. Tuchel now has the chance to guide his team into football history.

Speaking ahead of the match, the England manager said his players are ready for the challenge.

“We want to take the next step. I really like the energy in our camp. The players are very excited and ambitious. That’s exactly what we need for this game,” Tuchel said.

The clash also renews one of football’s greatest rivalries. England and Argentina have produced several unforgettable World Cup meetings over the years, including the controversial 1966 quarter-final, Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God” goal in 1986, and David Beckham’s red card in the 1998 tournament.

Tuchel admitted the history between both nations adds extra excitement to the contest.

“It is a very big rivalry between two big footballing nations. The players are aware of it. When a fixture provides so many iconic moments, you can’t say it is just another football match.”

Argentina, managed by Lionel Scaloni, are hoping to defend the World Cup title they won in Qatar four years ago. Much of their hopes once again rest on captain Lionel Messi, who continues to inspire his country despite being 39 years old.

Messi has already shown his quality at this tournament and remains Argentina’s biggest attacking threat.

Tuchel described the Inter Miami star as a unique player.

“Messi is just incredible. There are no words left for his kind of achievement, with the quality and leadership he shows. He’s the leader and the key player in this Argentina team.”

England, meanwhile, will rely on captain Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who have been their standout performers throughout the competition. The pair have scored 12 of England’s 13 goals at the tournament and will be expected to deliver again on the biggest stage.

Both teams have survived difficult moments on their road to the last four, making Wednesday’s encounter difficult to predict.

With a place in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain on the line, another memorable chapter will be added to the famous England-Argentina rivalry.
