Match Preview: Plateau United v Enyimba

By: Timothy Dehinbo

Plateau United face Enyimba Int’l FC in their matchday 2 fixture at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium, Jos, on Wednesday 18th January, 2017.

Goals from captain of the side, Elisha Golbe and John Kim were all it took the Tin City Boys to take their matchday 1 hosts, Remo Stars to the cleaners.

The match which started at a high pace saw the home team asking all the questions in the first quarter of the half with a good number of scoring chances that couldn’t be converted.

Plateau started the damage in the 26th minute when John Kim benefited from a square play by Kabiru Umar to slot home for the first goal.

The home side gave their fans something to cheer when Victor Mbaoma nodded home a set piece from Abiodun Abdulrasheed, just before the break.

In the early minutes of the second half, precisely in the 52nd minute, Elisha Golbe wasted no time in converting a free kick outside the area, that turned out to be the match-winner.

The hosts gave a real scare in the 85th minute when Victor Mbaoma’s free kick was heading towards the top corner of the post. It took the exceptional heroics of veteran goalkeeper, John Gaadi to divert the direction of the ball into touch.

After the match, the coach of Plateau United FC, Kennedy Boboye, was full of praise for the league newcomers, Remo Stars, insisting that they were not a bad side; but plateau United only put in a good fight.

“They truly gave us a good fight, they are a good side. We emerged victorious because we were at the top of our game. The story would have been different if they had converted their chances”, said Boboye.

He also said his team would remain focused and do and do all to get a win at home on Wednesday against Enyimba.

Enyimba got their season started on Sunday with a 1 nil victory over Sunshine stars at their adopted UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar courtesy a goal from former Elkanemi warriors striker, Ibrahim Mustapha which joined the People’s Elephants in the transfer window.

Enyimba’s coach Gbenga Ogunbote said he was filled with happiness as his team recorded their first win of the season in their opening game.

Ogunbote expressed satisfaction with the game’s outcome, predicting that the Aba side would emerge victorious at the end of the season.

He said his team was looking ahead to recording victory in every match, and are out for 3 points when they visit Plateau United on Wednesday evening.

Plateau United won 2 nil at home last season, with Enyimba also winning at home 1 nil.

With both teams getting three points on matchday 1, they would be cautious as they face each other on Wednesday and would both be looking to win.

It might be too early in the season to look at the table, but these two sides know that getting positive results early would go a long way for them in the season.

The game would be tough as Plateau always give their visitors tough time at home.
PREDICTION: PLATEAU UTD 1-1 ENYIMBA FC
