Merino scores late again as Spain beat Belgium to reach World Cup semi-finals

Mikel Merino was Spain’s hero once again after coming off the bench to score a late winner in a 2-1 victory over Belgium and send his country into the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Arsenal midfielder struck in the 88th minute after Belgium’s substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold Pau Cubarsi’s long-range shot. Merino reacted quickly to fire the rebound into the roof of the net just 117 seconds after replacing Dani Olmo.
It was another important goal from the midfielder, who also scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Portugal in the last 16.
Spain had taken the lead in the 30th minute through Fabian Ruiz. The move started with Lamine Yamal and Pedro Porro combining well on the right before Porro crossed into the box. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Olmo’s first effort, but Ruiz was first to the loose ball and finished through the legs of defender Timothy Castagne.
Belgium fought back before half-time. Charles De Ketelaere met Castagne’s cross with a powerful header to make it 1-1, ending Spain’s impressive run of 649 minutes without conceding a goal at the tournament.
The second half was closely contested, with both teams creating chances. Belgium appealed for a penalty after the ball struck Rodri’s arm inside the box, but the referee waved play on. At the other end, Courtois made another important save to deny Mikel Oyarzabal.
Belgium’s hopes suffered a major setback in the 71st minute when Courtois picked up what appeared to be a muscle injury and had to leave the pitch in tears.
His replacement, Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, could not stop Spain’s winner after spilling Cubarsi’s shot, allowing Merino to score from close range.
The victory sends Spain into the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face France in Dallas on 14 July for a place in the final. Belgium, meanwhile, bow out of the tournament after a brave performance.
