Athletic Bilbao secured their first trophy since the 2015/16 season when they defeated Barcelona after extra time in the Spanish Super Cup final in Seville on Sunday. Athletic came into the game after knocking out Real Madrid in the semi-final game of the competition.
Barcelona took the lead in the 40th minute through French striker, Antoine Griezmann. Athletic showed that they were up for the task when they equalised two minutes later through Oscar DeMarcos. Barca retook the lead through Griezmann again in the second half, before Athletic got a 90th minute equaliser through Asier Villalibre. Three minutes into extra time, Inaki Williams scored an absolute belter to give Atnletic the lead for the first time in the game. Messi received his marching orders in the 120th minute after lashing out at Villalibre in a coming together. It was Messi’s first ever sending off as a Barcelona player.
The result at Seville ensured that Barcelona have failed to win a single trophy since the 2018/19 season.
