Off the Pitch

Messi’s Bodyguard Banned from MLS Matches

Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has been banned from entering Major League Soccer (MLS) and Concacaf Champions Cup matches, meaning he will no longer be seen patrolling the sidelines at Inter Miami games.

For months, Cheuko has been a familiar presence, ensuring Messi’s safety on and off the pitch. However, this decision now raises questions about the security of the Argentine superstar during matches.

Cheuko Reacts to the Ban

Cheuko addressed the situation in a video posted online, confirming his removal from match sidelines.

“I’m no longer allowed on the field,” he said, expressing frustration over the decision.

The former military operative compared security in the U.S. and Europe, revealing that in his seven years working in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, there were only six pitch invasions. In contrast, since moving to the U.S. 20 months ago, there have been 16 incidents involving fans rushing onto the pitch to get close to Messi.

Despite his disappointment, Cheuko accepted the league’s ruling, saying: “I understand the decision.”

Why Was Cheuko Banned?

The ban became clear during Inter Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal match against Monterrey on April 10, 2024, when Cheuko was not allowed on the field.

Reports suggest the decision came after an incident in the first leg, where Messi—who was injured at the time—confronted Monterrey’s coaching staff over refereeing decisions. Cheuko was involved in the altercation, leading to his restriction from the pitch.

Moving forward, Cheuko will only be allowed in locker rooms and mixed zones, but not on the field.

What Does This Mean for Messi’s Security?

With Cheuko banned from the sidelines, concerns have been raised about Messi’s safety during matches. Pitch invaders may now feel more confident about attempting to reach the football icon, knowing his trusted bodyguard is no longer present.

Messi’s MLS journey now enters a new phase—without his personal protector watching over him on the sidelines.
