Mickelson misses US PGA Championship cut for first time in 22 years

Phil Mickelson’s 100th major has been one to forget after his impressive run of making the cut at the US PGA Championship came to an end.

Mickelson followed his birdieless first-round 79 at Quail Hollow with a somewhat better three-over 74 but still missed the cut at the tournament for only the second time in his career and the first time in 22 years.

His 11-over 36-hole total put him in a tie for 133rd place by the time he tapped in on his final hole and was assured of missing the event’s cut for the first time since 1995 at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.

On Friday, Mickelson mixed four bogeys and a double with three birdies — all in a five-hole stretch on the front nine — and the rest pars.

The tournament marked his first US PGA Championship without long-time caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay on his bag. Instead, Mickelson’s brother Tim was alongside him at Quail Hollow.

While it is only the second time Mickelson, 47, has missed the cut in the last major of the season, it is the second straight grand slam event in which he did not make it to the weekend. The five-time major winner missed the cut last month in The Open at Royal Birkdale.
