Mikel Obi and Didier Drogba work to convince Victor Osimhen to join Chelsea

Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has opened up about his efforts, alongside former Chelsea teammate Didier Drogba, to persuade Victor Osimhen to join Chelsea. The two football icons are actively working to make the move happen, despite ongoing challenges with the transfer.

Osimhen’s desire to leave Napoli this summer has been widely known, but the deal has been complicated by Napoli’s steep release clause and the striker’s demands regarding his salary. Chelsea, having recently renewed their interest after a setback in their pursuit of another player, see Osimhen as a key target.

In a recent video, Mikel explained why he believes Osimhen would be an excellent fit for Chelsea. “We don’t really need somebody who’s going to come in and be feeding and creating chances,” Mikel said. “We want somebody who can finish, score goals, the tap-ins. Someone like Erling Haaland. That’s something Victor Osimhen will bring to Chelsea.”

Mikel revealed that both he and Drogba have been actively communicating with Osimhen to encourage him to consider Chelsea seriously. “I hope that Chelsea fans will finally see him come to the club. I’ll make sure I send him those text messages and call him, making sure Chelsea is his top priority! He seems like he loves the club. He seems like he wants to come to Chelsea,” Mikel shared.

Drogba, who is one of Osimhen’s idols, is also involved in the effort, sharing his own experiences and emphasising the club’s significance. Mikel added, “Didier is also speaking to him and sharing his own ideas, what the club means to us. We all want to see Victor come to the club. If it happens, it happens. It’s a huge transfer fee, but if we can match it and get him to the club, that would be absolutely fantastic.”

As the transfer window approaches its final weeks, Chelsea remains determined to make the deal work, with Mikel and Drogba’s advocacy potentially playing a crucial role in influencing Osimhen’s decision.
