Morocco Edge Nigeria on Penalties to Reach AFCON Final in Rabat

Tournament hosts Morocco reached the Africa Cup of Nations final after beating Nigeria 4–2 on penalties following a tense, goalless semi-final in Rabat.
Both teams were well organised and cautious, and there was no goal after 120 minutes. Goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Yassine Bounou made important saves to keep the match level.
Morocco enjoyed more possession in the first half but struggled to create clear chances. Brahim Díaz and Adam Masina came close, while Achraf Hakimi’s long-range free-kick hit the top of the net.
Nigeria threatened on the counter-attack, with Ademola Lookman forcing a save from Bounou, but Éric Chelle’s side found it difficult to break down the Moroccan defence.
The second half followed the same pattern, with few chances. Raphael Onyedika and Abde Ezzalzouli both tested the goalkeepers as neither team wanted to make a costly mistake.
Extra time also failed to produce a goal. Morocco hit the post through Nayef Aguerd, while Nigeria struggled to create clear openings despite their strong defensive display throughout the tournament.
The match was decided on penalties. Nigeria were given early hope when Hamza Igamane’s kick was saved, but Samuel Chukwueze missed for Nigeria. Achraf Hakimi then scored calmly before Bruno Onyemaechi missed his effort, allowing Youssef En-Nesyri to seal the win for Morocco.
Morocco will now face defending champions Senegal in Sunday’s final as the hosts move closer to their first AFCON title since 1976.
