Mourinho threatens United with PSG switch if he is not given money to sign more players

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly ready to demand that the club back him in the transfer market amid speculation linking him with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mourinho has spent almost £300m on six major signings since arriving at Old Trafford in summer 2016 and last season steered the club to EFL Cup and Europa League glory – the latter of which also brought about a return to the Champions League.

United currently sit second in the Premier League table, but Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea left them eight points adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City, who also spent big money during the summer.

The United board are understood to have told Mourinho that he must sell players in order to raise funds before he can bring any new faces in, but the Mirror reports that he is ready to challenge the club’s hierarchy.

Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes is reported to have been contacted by PSG, who shook up the whole transfer market during the summer with the £200m acquisition of Neymar and £166m agreement to sign Kylian Mbappe.

Mourinho is now willing to use that link as a bargaining chip to get more funds of his own at United, although he still may have to offload players in order to do that.

Mourinho is contracted to United until 2019, with the option of a further year on top of that, but PSG are understood to be interested in the two-time Champions League winner.
