Mozambique to Face Nigeria in AFCON Round of 16

Mozambique will take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on 5 January 2026. The Mambas advanced from Group F despite a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon on Wednesday.

Cameroon secured their place in the knockout stages with a hard-fought victory in Agadir, while Mozambique progressed as one of the tournament’s best-performing third-placed teams.

Mozambique made history in the group stage by claiming their first-ever win at an AFCON finals with a 1-0 victory over Gabon. They knew a positive result against Cameroon would have guaranteed progression.

Cameroon started strongly, creating several chances early on, but Mozambique took the lead through Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo, who curled a superb strike into the bottom corner from outside the area. Cameroon responded quickly, with Nené scoring an own goal to level the match. In the second half, Christian Kofane fired a stunning long-range effort to put Cameroon ahead 2-1.

Mozambique tried to respond, but Cameroon held on for the win. Despite the defeat, Mozambique’s results in the group were enough to see them through to the last 16, where they will face a strong Nigerian side.

The Mambas will now prepare to challenge the Super Eagles in what promises to be an exciting knockout encounter.
