Nasarawa Amazons One Win Away from First NWFL Title in Eight Years

Nasarawa Amazons are just one step away from winning their first Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) title since 2017.

The team from Lafia, coached by Christopher Musa Danjuma, has had a strong season and now leads the Super Six table with eight points from four matches — two wins and two draws. They are one point ahead of defending champions Edo Queens, making Friday’s final matchday crucial.

Speaking to Ademola Victor TV, Coach Danjuma said, “It’s just one more step so we can shout Hallelujah,” as he expressed confidence in his players’ ability to finish the job.

The Amazons will face Edo Queens on Saturday, May 17, at 3:00 p.m. at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. A win will hand either team the championship, while a draw could open the door for others to sneak in, depending on goal difference and goals scored.

Danjuma, who also coaches Nigeria’s U20 women’s team (the Falconets), said his team must give everything in the final match:

“We won’t come this far only to fall at the last hurdle.”

He has a long history in Nigerian women’s football, having led the Falconets to the quarter-finals of the 2022 U-20 World Cup and the Round of 16 at last year’s edition. Now, he is on the brink of achieving major success in the local league with the Amazons, who last won the NWFL title in 2013 and 2017.

Despite finishing third in Group A during the regular season, Nasarawa Amazons have been one of the standout teams in the Super Six.

However, they are not the only ones still in the title race. Bayelsa Queens, Remo Stars Ladies, and Edo Queens all have a chance of becoming champions.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi confirmed that all three final matches will kick off at the same time to ensure fairness.

“Simultaneous kick-off ensures fairness and keeps the excitement alive,” she said.

On the other pitches:

  • Bayelsa Queens will play Naija Ratels, who have yet to earn a point. A big win for Bayelsa could send them to the top.

  • Remo Stars Ladies will face Rivers Angels, hoping for a win and favourable results elsewhere.

As Matchday 5 approaches, the stage is set for one of the most exciting finishes in NWFL history.
