Nathan Tella Ruled Out of Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Playoffs

Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella will not be available for Nigeria’s Super Eagles when they play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.
In just over two weeks, the Super Eagles will resume international duty, facing Gabon in the semi-finals of the playoffs. If they advance, they will meet the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon in the final round.
Coach Eric Chelle will be keen to have his best players available as Nigeria fights for a place at the World Cup, but he will have to do without one of his key attackers.
Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand confirmed that Tella is still recovering from a knee injury that has kept him out of action since last month.
“With Nathan Tella, the injury was more difficult and complicated than we first thought,” Hjulmand said. “I think he’ll need the international break as well. It’s looking better, but I can’t say when he’ll return exactly.”
Tella’s absence is a setback for the Super Eagles, as it reduces Chelle’s attacking options ahead of the crucial games. However, Nigeria still boasts a strong attacking lineup with Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon expected to be available.
Tella will now focus on his recovery and hopes to return to action for Bayer Leverkusen as soon as possible.
