National Sports Festival: Why I rejected HUGE Ogun State offer to represent Akwa Ibom – 3-gold medalist Edidiong Umoafia reveals

At the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, one name has risen above the rest again, Edidiong Umoafia, Team Akwa Ibom’s weightlifting powerhouse, who bagged three gold medals in dominant fashion. But beyond the podium finishes lies a story of loyalty, perseverance, and an unshakable dream.

In an exclusive interview with SportsRations’ Nsikakabasi Akpan after receiving his medals, Umoafia, a nine-time national champion and undefeated since 2017 in domestic competitions, revealed he turned down a lucrative offer from Ogun State to switch allegiance ahead of the festival.

“Ogun State called me and offered a huge amount of money, but I turned it down just to represent my state and make us proud,” he said. “There are a lot of people doing sports and getting more rewards, but I’ve promised myself I will keep winning for Akwa Ibom with the hope that one day, the government will recognize and celebrate me.”

Despite facing injuries, frustration, and what he describes as underappreciation, Edidiong has remained committed to Akwa Ibom, a choice driven by pride, not profit.

“It’s a long process,” he said after his medal ceremony at the Civic Center in Ikenne. “It takes dedication, hard work, patience, and time. I’ve gone through a lot.”

Internationally, Umoafia continues to make Nigeria proud. He clinched a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and followed it up with a historic triple gold at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Accra, where he was the only Nigerian to top the podium.

Yet, recognition has lagged behind the results.

“I remain hopeful that one day I’ll get the celebration my efforts and achievements deserve,” he said. “I hope that through the efforts of our Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, and Honourable Commissioner Elder Paul Bassey, things will change.”

Looking ahead, Umoafia’s ambitions are global. With just a month to prepare for the Commonwealth Games qualifiers in India this August, he’s also eyeing the All African Games in Egypt, the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, and ultimately, the Olympic Games.

To get there, he’s calling on private organizations and well-meaning individuals to support not just him, but Nigerian athletes whose passion and performance have the power to elevate the nation.

“This is more than sport,” he said. “It’s about pride, identity, and the belief that with the right support, we can lift not just weights but our country.”
