Netherlands Show Power of Direct Football in 5-1 Win Over Sweden

The Netherlands produced one of the most impressive performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, thrashing Sweden 5-1 to move to the brink of qualification for the knockout stage.

Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored two goals each, while Crysencio Summerville added another as Ronald Koeman’s side responded strongly to criticism following their opening 2-2 draw against Japan.

The match offered several important lessons for teams still competing in the tournament.

The first lesson was the value of direct attacking football. After being criticised for their slow build-up play against Japan, the Dutch changed their approach and attacked Sweden with speed and purpose. Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a quick move that started from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and ended with a simple finish from close range.

A second lesson was the importance of having a strong target man. Brobbey’s physical presence troubled Sweden’s defence throughout the first half. His hold-up play created space for teammates, while his movement helped him score twice inside the opening 17 minutes.

Another key lesson came from Koeman’s decision-making. The Dutch coach made a bold call by starting Brobbey ahead of Summerville, and the striker rewarded him with two goals. Koeman then introduced Summerville at half-time, and the winger changed the game with a goal and an assist. The substitutions showed the value of having quality players ready to make an impact from the bench.

Sweden also learned a painful lesson about missed opportunities. Although they improved after changing to a back four and created several chances, they failed to take advantage of their best moments. Their disallowed goal before half-time could have changed the mood of the contest, but they could not build on their improved performance.

The match further highlighted the importance of teamwork. Denzel Dumfries provided dangerous deliveries from wide areas, while Gakpo and Brobbey combined effectively in attack. The Dutch looked organised, confident and ruthless in front of goal.

For Sweden, another lesson was that star strikers cannot succeed without service. Premier League forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres were largely quiet because the midfield and defence struggled to support them.

The victory takes the Netherlands to the top of Group F with four points and leaves them close to a place in the last 32. More importantly, it showed that Koeman’s side have learned from their earlier mistakes and could become one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams if they maintain this level of performance.
