NFF confirms Ighalo out of AFCON without replacement

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that Odion Ighalo will not be joining the Super Eagles squad in their quest for a fourth African Cup of Nations title.

Last night, Nigeria’s contingent flew into Garoua with Ighalo missing after problem on his invitation arose between the federation and Al Shabab.

Confirming that the striker is no longer expected to link-up with the rest squad, the NFF wrote:

“…Forward Odion Ighalo is no longer expected as a result of issues with his Saudi Arabian club.”

To add to that, BBC Sport, claim that Nigeria team officials might not be able to call up a replacement.

Recalled that Ighalo announced his retirement from international football last November after the 32-year-old emerged top scorer at the 2019 AFCON with five goals.

Article 72.2 of CAF’s tournament regulations state that: “A player on the final list cannot be replaced unless seriously injured at the latest 24 hours at least before the beginning of the first match of his team.
