NFF to Receive $1m Annually as CAF Restructures National Team Competitions

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to receive $1 million every year following major reforms announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, confirmed the funding increase as part of the restructuring of senior national team competitions, which includes the introduction of the African Nations League and a $1 billion commercial tender aimed at boosting African football.

Under the new arrangement, each of CAF’s 54 member associations, including Nigeria, will receive $1 million annually. This is a significant increase from the previous allocation of $200,000 per year.

Motsepe said the reforms would strengthen CAF’s ability to support its members financially.

“The restructuring of the CAF senior national team competitions and the $1 billion tender we have initiated will enable CAF to contribute $1 million every year to each of the 54 member associations,” he said.

For Nigeria, the increased funding is expected to ease financial pressure on the NFF, which is responsible for managing several national teams, women’s football, youth development programmes and domestic competitions.

Motsepe explained that the funds will be directed towards grassroots and youth development, women’s football, club competitions and regional tournaments, which are key areas for the future growth of the game.

“We will allocate a substantial amount of resources to the training and development of young boys and girls, as this is one of the best investments for the future of African football,” he added.

CAF also announced that prize money for its club competitions, including the Champions League and Confederation Cup, will be increased. Official figures are expected to be released after AFCON Morocco 2025.

According to Motsepe, the reforms are also aimed at improving scheduling and aligning African football calendars with global fixtures, to reduce conflicts between clubs and national teams.

With Nigeria remaining one of Africa’s leading football nations, the annual $1 million support is expected to play an important role in strengthening the NFF’s operations and long-term planning.
