Nigeria 1 Austria 4: Super Falcons battered in Cyprus

Nine-time African women champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria were battered 4-1 by Austria in their first game at the ongoing Cyprus Women’s Cup on Wednesday.

Thomas Dennerby side traveled far Cyprus to continue their preparation for the forthcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup, but it was sort of starting they never envisaged.

Nigeria’s female national women team started on a good note but a red card to goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi in the seventh minute of the game shattered the team’s plan.

Super Falcons rallied after going one player down to play out a goalless draw in the first 45 minutes of the game but couldn’t prevent the onslaught from the Europeans in the second half.

Tor Nina Burger opened the floodgate in the 48th minute of the game, Nicole Billa doubled the Europeans advantage in the 59th minute.

But Asisat Oshoala reduced the deficit with a fine strike in the 65th minute after scoring from a fine pass from Anam Imo.

In the 67th minute, Dennerby made triple substitutions with Chinaza Uchendu, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Anam Imo going out for Josephine Chukwunonye, Sonia Okobi, Alice Ogebe respectively.

Laura Feiersinge restored the two-goal lead of the Europeans in the 72nd minute of the game after scoring from
from Elisabeth Mayr perfect delivery from the corner kick.

It became four for the Austrians in the 82nd minute when Jennifer Klein scored to complete the demolition of the African champions.

4-1 it ended against Nigeria at AEK Arena in Larnaca. Up next for Asisat Oshoala and co is a clash against Slovakia on Friday.
