Nigeria annihilate Central Africa Republic 114-69 to qualify for 2019 FIBA World Cup

Nigeria’s men national basketball team D’Tigers blew away Central Africa Republic 114-69 on Saturday to become the first country to qualify for 2019 FIBA World Cup.

There was no stopping the 2015 Afrobasket Champions at the National Stadium in Surulere as they breezed past their opponent to improve their world cup qualifier record to 8-0.

Six Nigerian players; Al Farouq Aminu (12), Alade Aminu (11), Ikenna Iroegbu (18), Stanley Okoye (11), Ike Nwamu (16), and Benjamin Uzoh (16) posted double digit points as the team dominated their opponents in all the quarters.

The first, second, third and fourth quarter ended 25-20, 26-19, 37-21 and 26-9 in favour of D’Tigers.

Al Farouq Aminu was again the top performer for D’Tigers as he led the team in rebounds (8), assists (5), and steal (3) while Ikenna Iroegbu led the team in points with 18.

D’Tigers were so dominant against Central Africa Republic that they led 35-0 in points from turn over, 21-10 in fast break points, 24-6 in second chance points, 52-14 from points in in the paint and 59-27 from points from the bench.

John Grenbongo who posted 17 points was Central Africa Republic top performer on the day.

In the games played earlier in the day, CIV beat Rwanda 71-53 while Senegal beat Mali 82-71.

Nigeria will play their last game of the qualifiers tomorrow against Senegal, Mali will tackle CIV, Rwanda will lock horns with Central Africa Republic.
