Nigeria beats Turkey 86-74 to win their first ever FIBA World Cup game

The Nigeria’s women national basketball team, D’Tigress has beaten Turkey to secure their first ever win in a FIBA World Cup game.

Led by 24 points from Celta de Vigo guard Sarah Ogoke Nigeria overturned 7 points deficit at the end of the first quarter to take a 86-74 win against the 7th ranked Turkish team at the Santa Cruz de, Tenerife on Sunday.

After enduring a 86-68 loss to 2006 champions, Australia in their firat game, the African champions fought back to down Turkey in their second game.

Nigeria improved greatly in their second game as they out shot from 3s, out-rebounded, made more free throws and were largely a better team on the day.

After losing the first quarter 7-15, they won the 2nd and 3rd quarters 22-17 and 23-10, and lost 22-26 to claim a 86-74 win.

Sarah Ogoke was Nigeria’s top performer with 22 points, 6 rebounds and +20 efficiency while Quanitra Hollingsworth was Turkey’s top performer with 11 points, 3 rebounds,and +13 efficiency.

Ezine Kalu led Nigeria in assists with 5, Evelyn Akhator led in rebounds with 10, Promise Amukamara led in steal with 2, and Adaora Elonu led in block with 3.
