Nigeria Confirms Interest in Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja
Nigeria has officially shown interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja. The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) submitted its expression of interest before the deadline on 28 March 2025, signalling the start of a possible bid.
According to a statement from Tony Nezianya, the NOC’s Public Relations Officer, hosting the Games would be a great chance for Nigeria to highlight its development, improve its international image, and promote a stronger sports culture in the country.
The Games would also lead to the building and upgrading of sports facilities, transport systems, and accommodation, which would benefit both athletes and the general public for years to come.
This is not Nigeria’s first attempt at hosting the Commonwealth Games. In 2007, Abuja bid for the 2014 edition but lost to Glasgow, Scotland, in a 47–24 vote. However, Nigeria successfully hosted the African Games in 2003, showing it can handle major international sporting events.
The NOC’s move is an important first step in making Nigeria’s dream of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games a reality. With support from the Federal Government, Nigeria could submit a formal bid and host a successful event that unites the nation and demonstrates its strength in sport and infrastructure.
