Nigeria draw 2024 FIFA Under-17 World Cup hosts

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have been placed in Group A for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2024.

They will compete against the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and New Zealand. The tournament, which will see 16 teams vying for the title, is scheduled to take place in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3, 2024.

Group A Draw:

  • Dominican Republic (Hosts)
  • Ecuador
  • New Zealand
  • Nigeria

Nigeria’s Path to Qualification:

The Flamingos showcased their dominance during the qualifying campaign:

  • Defeated the Central African Republic (CAR) with a 12-0 aggregate score.
  • Overcame Burkina Faso with a 7-1 aggregate.
  • Triumphed over Liberia with a 6-1 aggregate score.

These victories secured Nigeria’s eighth qualification for the U-17 Women’s World Cup, highlighting their consistent performance at this level.

Historical Performance:

Nigeria’s U-17 team is one of the most successful in Africa, having reached the knockout stages in four of their six U-17 Women’s World Cup appearances. They are aiming to build on their third-place finish in the 2022 tournament and are considered favorites to top Group A.

Other African Teams:

  • Kenya and Zambia are also representing Africa in the tournament.
  • Group C includes Kenya alongside Korea DPR, Mexico, and England.
  • Group D features Zambia along with Japan, Poland, and Brazil.

The Flamingos, under the guidance of coach Bankole Olowookere, will look to continue their strong form and aim for a historic performance in the Dominican Republic.
