Nigeria may part ways with Jose Peseiro

The Nigeria Football Federation may part ways with Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro at the end of his current contract.

Portuguese gaffer Jose Peseiro was appointed Super Eagles Head Coach in May 2022 as replacement for then interim manager Austin Eguaveon who has since reverted to his role as NFF Technical Director.

According to the PUNCH, Peseiro will not have his contract renewed when it expires in few weeks time.

His contract was tied to the Super Eagles performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament but following the rescheduling of the 2023 AFCON, Glasshouse sources are backing a separation at the expiration of the current contract.

Peseiro`s assessment will go down to his performance in the past year. The Super Eagles have won just 3 of his 8 games in charge, losing five to slip down the FIFA ranking.

Despite falling to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria`s Super Eagles were ranked 30th in the world before Peseiro took charge but have slipped down 10-places to 40th in the world per the April 2023 FIFA ranking.

According to a Nigeria Football Federation source, the NFF consider Peseiro`s monthly wage too much when compared to the results turned in and so will prefer a change.

In his place, a Coaching crew led by an indigeneous coach will be appointed in charge of the Eagles.

Current assistants Finidi George and Salisu Yusuf are tipped as possible replacements with Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh and Austin Eguaveon also mentioned by Glasshouse sources.

However, with the Eagles yet to conclude 2023 AFCON qualification games, the NFF may consider sticking with Peseiro but that will come with a massive wage-cut an option that the former Porto FC manager will likely not be comfortable with.

The Super Eagles face Sierra Leone [Away] and Sao Tome and Principe in the 2023 AFCON qualifying games.
