Nigeria move up to 28th on FIFA rankings after 2023 AFCON performance
Nigeria has made a significant leap in the latest FIFA World Ranking, positioning itself as the third-best team in Africa, higher than 2023 AFCON champions, Cote d’Ivoire.
Following an impressive performance at the 2023 AFCON tournament, Nigeria has climbed 14 places in the FIFA Ranking, now sitting at the 28th spot in the World.
Despite falling short in the final against host nation Cote d’Ivoire in a 2-1 defeat, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, led by Jose Peseiro, garnered praise for their remarkable journey throughout the competition.
This surge in the rankings marks Nigeria’s highest move in 11 years, matching their position in May 2013 when they were ranked 28th in the world.
Currently, Nigeria trails behind Morocco, which occupies the 12th position after moving up one spot, and Senegal, ranked 17th following a three-place climb.
In addition, Nigeria now stands ahead of Cote d’Ivoire, the reigning AFCON champions, who have climbed 10 places to secure the 39th spot.
While there have been no alterations in the top 10 rankings, the biggest movers in the latest FIFA Ranking are AFCON quarterfinalists Angola, who have surged 24 places to reach the 94th position.
Despite the final outcome, Nigeria’s rise in the FIFA Ranking reflects the team’s commendable performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.
