Nigeria to Host 2025 WAFU B U-17 Championship
Nigeria has been confirmed as the host of the 2025 WAFU B U-17 Championship, which will take place this September in Ogun State.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the announcement after its President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, paid a visit to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in Abeokuta.
Two stadiums in the state will host matches during the regional tournament — the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta and the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. Both venues have been upgraded and are ready to host international matches.
The NFF praised Ogun State for its peaceful environment and top-quality sports facilities.
The championship will feature youth teams from Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger Republic, Benin, Togo, and host nation Nigeria.
The tournament is also the qualifying competition for the 2025 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, making it an important event for discovering new football talent in West Africa.
Nigeria’s team, the Golden Eaglets, will be hoping to impress at home after missing out on the last two FIFA U-17 World Cups and failing to qualify for the 2025 U-17 AFCON.
With five World Cup titles and two African titles at this level, the Golden Eaglets will aim to return to winning ways in front of their home fans.
In addition to the boys’ tournament, Ogun State will also host two friendly matches between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses.
The first match will take place at the Remo Stars Stadium on Saturday, 31 May, while the second will be played at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Tuesday, 3 June.
These games are part of Nigeria’s preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which has been rescheduled to start in Morocco on 5 July 2025.
