Nigeria vs Benin Republic: Eguavoen reveals how he will name starting lineup

Super Eagles interim boss Austin Eguavoen has shed light on Victor Osimhen’s anticipated role in Nigeria’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic.

Osimhen, who recently completed his move to Turkish side Galatasaray, joined the Super Eagles camp on Thursday. Despite having been sidelined for over three months, with no appearances for both club and country due to his exclusion from Napoli’s squad, Osimhen is expected to feature in the clash.

During a pre-match press conference, Eguavoen discussed his squad selection, including the forward’s fitness and the goalkeeping situation, with Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye both competing for the starting spot. Eguavoen acknowledged the depth of quality in the squad, stating, “We have a pool of 23 players, and it’s something I’ll have to sleep over before deciding who starts. It’s a good headache to have, with so many fit and talented players.”

Nwabali, who has been the preferred choice since the 2023 AFCON, faces competition from Okoye, who has impressed for Udinese in recent weeks. The decision on who will start between the posts remains uncertain.

Eguavoen also addressed the team’s objectives for the AFCON 2025 qualifier matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda, making it clear that the focus is not on seeking revenge but rather on securing crucial points for qualification. With Osimhen’s return and the squad’s overall fitness, the Super Eagles will be aiming for a strong performance in their upcoming fixtures.
