Nigeria Women’s Rugby League Team Ready for World Series in Canada – Coach Shearman
Assistant coach of Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team, Luke Shearman, has expressed confidence in the Green Falcons’ readiness ahead of their participation in the World Rugby League Series taking place later this month in Canada.
Speaking after a week of intense training in Abuja, Shearman said the team had made great progress in fitness, discipline, and tactical awareness. He praised the players for their hard work and determination to represent Nigeria with pride.
“We’ve worked hard over the past few weeks,” Shearman said. “The girls are showing real hunger and improvement in key areas like defence, ball handling, and positional play. There’s still more work to be done, but the progress has been very encouraging.”
He explained that the ongoing camp has focused on improving the team’s physical condition and fine-tuning their technical play ahead of the global tournament.
“Our goal is not just to participate but to compete,” he added. “We’re working on our structure, mental toughness, and consistency under pressure. These are the small details that make a big difference at this level.”
The Nigerian team will depart for Canada on October 17 and will face Ireland in their opening match of the competition. Shearman said the players are motivated to make history and show that Nigeria can compete with the best teams in the world.
“This group has character,” he said. “They understand what it means to wear the green and white jersey. Every tackle, every sprint, every pass — it’s all about making Nigeria proud.”
The Green Falcons will represent Africa alongside Kenya and South Africa, with hopes of achieving Nigeria’s best-ever finish at a major international rugby competition.
