Nigerian Athletes shine on Day 4 of African Games to maintain lead

Nigerian athletes continued their impressive run on Day 4 of the African Games, adding more gold medals to their tally and solidifying their position at the top of the athletics medals table.

Ese Brume and Obiageri Amaechi emerged as standout performers in the women’s long jump and discus throw events, respectively, clinching gold medals for Nigeria.

Brume retained her title with an exceptional jump of 6.92m, setting a new mark for herself.

Despite facing tough competition, Brume’s outstanding performance secured her place in history as the second Nigerian woman to successfully defend a long jump title at the African Games.

Meanwhile, newcomer Prestina Ochonogor displayed immense promise by claiming the bronze medal with a personal best jump of 6.67m.

In the women’s discus throw, Amaechi delivered a stellar performance, winning her first international gold medal for Nigeria with a massive personal best throw of 58.93m. Her achievement marked a significant milestone in her career, dethroning her teammate and defending champion Chioma Onyekwere.

The women’s heptathlon also saw Kemi Francis-Petersen securing a medal for Nigeria, finishing with a total of 5268 points and claiming a spot on the podium.

With these remarkable performances, Nigeria maintained its dominance at the top of the medals table, boasting a total of 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals, far ahead of its closest competitors.

Looking ahead to Day 5, Nigerian sprinters Olayinka Olajide, Alaba Akintola, and Consider Ekanem are set to compete in the 200m final, aiming to add more medals to Nigeria’s impressive haul.
