Nigerian Footballers Mourn Late Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and His Brother

Super Eagles and Super Falcons players have shared emotional tributes on social media following the tragic death of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who died in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.

Liverpool FC confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying the 28-year-old Portugal international and his brother were involved in a fatal crash in Zamora province, Spain.

According to the BBC, Jota’s Lamborghini had a tyre burst while he was trying to overtake another car. The vehicle left the road and caught fire, killing both men.

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, had become a fan favourite at Anfield. His death has shocked not just the club, but the entire football world, where deaths of top players are very rare.

Nigerian Stars Pay Tribute

Following the heartbreaking news, several Nigerian footballers posted their reactions on social media.

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi shared a picture of Jota on Instagram with the caption: “This can’t even be real life.”

Ex-Chelsea and Super Eagles legend Mikel Obi wrote simply: “There are no words, RIP Diogo,” along with a photo of Jota.

Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala posted “OMG,” showing her shock at the news.

Other Nigerian stars like Victor Boniface, Ola Aina, and Taye Taiwo also shared black-and-white images of Jota to honour him.

A Huge Loss to Football

Jota made 190 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 63 goals and providing 24 assists. Although injuries affected his 2024–25 season, he was expected to play a key role in the next campaign.

His sudden passing is a huge loss to Liverpool, Portugal, and football fans around the world.
