Nigerian Governor threatens to withdraw funding from NPFL club over poor performance

Nigeria Premier Football League club (NPFL) , Gombe United FC have received the Governor’s message threatening to withdraw funding due to the teams poor performance.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya  has issued a stern warning about the possible withdrawal of financial support for the state-owned football club, due to their unsatisfactory performance in the ongoing 2023/2024 season of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The governor expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs at Gombe United, which currently holds the 14th position on the NPFL table.

In a recent television program, Governor Inuwa Yahaya revealed that Gombe United receives a monthly financial allocation of 12 million naira from the state government.

During the interview, the governor emphasized the need for Gombe United to improve their performance and operate in a more organized manner.

He highlighted the significant financial support the team receives each month and warned that if the team does not show improvement, he may consider discontinuing funding.

Additionally, the governor mentioned another football team, Doma United FC, which reportedly does not receive any financial support from the government but is flying high in the league.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s threat underscores the importance of accountability and performance in the management of state-owned football clubs, emphasizing the need for positive results to justify continued financial support from the government.

In their last game of 2023, the Savannah Scorpions suffered a 3-1 loss to Abia Warriors FC in Umuahia.

Their next game will be on January 10, 2024 when Rivers United FC visit the Pantami Stadium.
