Nigerian man dumps Football for Boxing because of Arsenal
A Nigerian man, Nsikakabasi Akpan, has quit football to begin a new career in professional boxing after Arsenal’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Akpan, a reporter with SportsRation, had boldly predicted that the Gunners would win this season’s Champions League title. However, following Arsenal’s 2-1 loss in the second leg against PSG – which saw them eliminated 3-1 on aggregate – he announced he was making good on a promise he had earlier made.
Taking to his Facebook page on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Akpan wrote:
“ BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
In fulfilment of my pledge, today I am officially leaving active football behind and making the switch to professional boxing. ⚡️
As many of you know, I made this promise if Arsenal lost to PSG in the Champions League and well, we all saw how that went…
But rather than dwell on past disappointments, I’m taking this as an opportunity to pursue a new challenge and create my own path.
This new journey holds some truly exciting chapters, and my goal is nothing short of greatness. I’m aiming for Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic Gold in boxing!
I can’t wait to share this next chapter with you all. The grind begins now! ”
Akpan’s switch from football to boxing has drawn reactions across social media, with many praising his boldness and sense of humour.
The Nigerian man now has his sights set on making history for Nigeria in the boxing ring.
