Nigerian Pride Shines as Nmecha and Chukwuemeka Make Dortmund History

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha has spoken with pride about his Nigerian roots after sharing a special moment with teammate Carney Chukwuemeka. Both players are of Igbo heritage — and for the first time, two Igbo players have played for Dortmund at the same time.

Chukwuemeka joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea FC during the winter. Since then, he’s been settling in well and playing alongside Nmecha, who was already at the club.

In an interview with *Afro Ballers*, Nmecha said it was a proud moment not just for him, but for the whole Igbo community.

> “It’s very special,” he said. “I was talking with \[Chukwuemeka] about it — I don’t think Dortmund has ever had two Igbo players playing together before.”

Nmecha’s father is Nigerian, and the 24-year-old has always felt close to his roots. He says sharing the pitch with another Nigerian feels powerful.

> “I feel very connected to where I come from. My dad is Igbo, and we both share that pride. It’s great to have another Nigerian with me on the pitch — there’s a strong bond.”

Nmecha also enjoys Nigerian music and food and is trying to learn more of the language.

> “I’m learning little by little — a few words here and there. But I know I need to learn more,” he said with a smile.

Recently, Nmecha scored in a tough game at the FIFA Club World Cup against Mamelodi Sundowns. His teammate Chukwuemeka came off the bench in that match. Both players hope to play together again in Dortmund’s next match against Ulsan HD FC.

As Dortmund continue their Club World Cup journey, Nigerian fans will be watching closely, proud of their rising stars and what they represent on the world stage.
