Nigerian Weightlifting Official Lawrence Iquaibom Elected to IWF Coaching and Research Committee
Veteran Nigerian weightlifting official, Coach Lawrence Iquaibom, has been elected as a member of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) 7-man Coaching and Research Committee.
The election, which featured 22 contestants from across the globe, was held during the IWF Electoral Congress on May 25, 2025, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Sharing the news on social media, Iquaibom expressed his gratitude, saying, *”Our merciful God has made it possible for me to be elected as a member of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) 7-man Coaching and Research Committee… I remain grateful for all your support and prayers.”
This marks another major milestone in Iquaibom’s long and distinguished career in weightlifting. Just last month, the Olympian and current International Technical Official was also elected as a member of the Technical Committee of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA).
A retired Director of Sports in Akwa Ibom State, Iquaibom represented Nigeria at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He also won gold at the 1983 Commonwealth Championship in Malta, among other international honours, before transitioning into sports administration where he made significant contributions until his retirement.
Abdul Alabi of Nigeria also gets a role on the Gender Equity Commission of IWF.
The second and final day of the IWF Electoral Congress in Riyadh (KSA) elected the following members of the IWF Committees and Commissions for the period 2025-2029:
