Nigeria’s Ese Brume jumps 6.92m to win African games gold

Nigeria’s Ese Brume soared to victory in the women’s long jump event at the African Games, showcasing her prowess by leaping a record-breaking distance of 6.92 meters to secure the gold medal in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Thursday night.

Brume, who previously claimed the title in 2019 in Rabat, Morocco, continued her exceptional performance five years later on Ghanaian soil.

Her first attempt was enough to clinch the gold medal, while her compatriot Prestina Ochonogor also displayed a commendable performance, earning the bronze medal with a jump of 6.67 meters.

With the success of Brume and Ochonogor, Nigeria’s Ruth Usoro missed the chance to make it a complete Nigeria podium finish as she finished fourth with a jump of 6.62 meters.

In addition to the triumphs in the long jump event, Nigeria showcased its dominance in other athletics disciplines. Obiageri Amachi excelled in the discus throw, claiming the gold medal with a personal best of 58.93 meters on her final attempt. Her compatriot Chioma Onyekwere secured the silver medal in the same event.

Furthermore, Kemi Francis-Petersen demonstrated her versatility in the women’s heptathlon event, earning the silver medal with 5268 points. Although she fell short of the gold, Francis-Petersen’s performance was commendable, with Ahouanwanou Odile of Benin Republic emerging as the eventual gold medalist.
