Nigeria’s MMA talent shines at National Amateur Championship

Nigeria’s budding Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters showcased their skills and determination at the inaugural National Amateur Championship, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

Aspiring fighters from the Northwest and central regions battled it out for a chance to represent Nigeria at the 2024 World Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Athletes from various states including Kwara, Kogi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and the FCT Abuja displayed their fighting spirit in thrilling matches.

In the women’s division, Beauty Akatiku emerged victorious in the 56kg category, while Felix Stephanie dominated the 65kg category. The men’s division saw impressive performances from Tarkpe Stephen, Aliyu Taofeeq, Ovye Charles, and David Ezekiel, among others.

Beyond the competition, the event also focused on developing MMA officiating in Nigeria. With the assistance of international judges and referees, the first-ever National Referees and Judges Seminar and Certification Program was conducted. This initiative resulted in the certification of seven new MMA Judges and one MMA Referee, strengthening the foundation for MMA officiating in the country.
