Nigeria’s President mentions Victor Osimhen’s POTY win, AFCON silver among one-year-In-office achievements
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated his first year in office by highlighting the remarkable achievements of Nigerian sports stars, including Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
Sworn in as Nigeria’s fifth democratically elected president since the return of democracy in 1999, Tinubu secured his position after a closely contested 2023 presidential election. Representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), he triumphed over rivals Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
Victor Osimhen’s accolade as Africa’s best footballer has been listed among Tinubu’s administration’s significant accomplishments. Osimhen, who became the first Nigerian to win the African Footballer of the Year award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, was crucial in Napoli’s unexpected Serie A title win last season, scoring 26 goals.
“It is a dream come true. I have to thank everybody who has helped me on this journey and all Africans who have helped to put me on the map despite my faults,” Osimhen said.
Adding to the celebration, Asisat Oshoala claimed her sixth title as Africa’s Women’s Footballer of the Year, while Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year. The Super Falcons were also honored as Women’s National Team of the Year following their impressive World Cup performance.
Marking his first year in office on May 29, 2024, President Tinubu praised the sports ministry’s milestones, highlighting the global success of Nigerian athletes.
“Grassroots sports development has been another significant focus, with efforts to identify and nurture young talent from various parts of the country, ensuring a continuous pipeline of skilled athletes who can represent Nigeria in various sports disciplines both locally and internationally,” stated a press release titled “One Year In Office: How Tinubu Administration is Building a Better Nigeria.”
The release also emphasised the administration’s strategic planning and resource allocation to prepare Team Nigeria for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. Efforts include comprehensive training programs and enhanced facilities to ensure optimal performance.
The Super Eagles won silver at the African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, their first finals appearance and silver medal in 23 years. The Super Falcons ended a 16-year Olympic drought by qualifying for the Paris Olympics 2024. Nigeria also placed second at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Victor Osimhen’s recognition as African Footballer of the Year stands out as a significant achievement, highlighting Nigeria’s competitive spirit and commitment to excellence in sports.
President Tinubu concluded by expressing his pride in Nigerian athletes and reaffirming the administration’s dedication to supporting and celebrating their accomplishments on the global stage.
