NNL Champion to get N5m – Board Chairman

Chairman of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Board, George Aluo, has announced that the 2023/2024 season champions will get a Five Million Naira (N5M) prize money.

George Aluo made this announcement during a media briefing on Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Abuja at the NNL Headquarters.

The NNL Board chairman expressed his satisfaction with the increased prize money, pointing out that this is the first time champions will receive financial rewards directly from the league organizers.

“Thanks to our Insurance partners, the winners of this season’s NNL will take home N5m. While this is a significant improvement, we aim to enhance the prize money further in the future. It’s noteworthy that this is the first time champions will receive financial rewards,” NNL Chairman, George Aluo told journalists.

He continued, shedding light on the upcoming fixtures, “The highlight will be the match between El-Kanemi and Nasarawa United at the Cathedral, which kicks off the Super 8 tournament. These are two teams that were relegated last season, and it’s intriguing to see them face off in the opener.”

Aluo also addressed the league’s progress, acknowledging the improved performance of clubs and referees, “For the first time in NNL history, clubs secured results on away grounds. Referees have been diligent, and any found wanting have been appropriately dealt with. In fact, seven referees were replaced in a single week.”

“In 356 regular-season games, there were 107 away wins, 88 draws, and 225 home victories, indicating positive growth. A total of 764 goals were scored, averaging 2 goals per match,” Aluo added.

The Super 8 tournament is scheduled to take place from June 7th to 14th, 2024 with comprehensive coverage ensured via a fans-engaging partnership with FRCN.

Aluo concluded by highlighting the awards to be presented, including Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer, and Best Referee.
