Novak Djokovic reveals why he lost Indian Wells first round match

Former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has blamed his early exit from Indian Wells on the poor condition of the court surface.

The Serbian player was defeated in three sets by Botic van de Zandschulp, ranked No. 85 in the world, losing 2-6, 6-3, 1-6. Djokovic’s performance was well below his usual standard.

After the match, Djokovic joined Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz in criticising the court conditions at Indian Wells.

“I regret my level of tennis, considering how I’ve been practising lately,” Djokovic said. “To be honest, the difference between the centre court and the other courts is huge. The ball bounces higher on the centre courts than on some of the highest clay courts. I really struggled with that and couldn’t find my rhythm.”

“Things are different for me in the last couple of years. I’ve struggled to play at my desired level,” he added. “Now and then, I have a few good tournaments, but mostly it’s a real challenge. It’s a struggle for me. I suppose nothing really prepares you for that moment. You just have to experience it and try to handle it as best as you can.”
