NPFL Super Six: Rivers United dim Sunshine Stars to secure maximum points
Rivers United dimmed Sunshine Stars 1-0 to secure maximum points in their NPFL Super Six matchday one clash on Saturday June 3.
A cagey contest was decided by a 60th minute penalty kick converted by left-back Ebube Duru.
The Sunshine Stars Vs Rivers United FC game was the second of day one, Â Enyimba FC and Remo Stars shared the spoils in the opening game, a four-goal thriller to get the Super Six playoffs underway.
Rivers United had the best chance at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan on Saturday evening, Nyima Nwagua and Albert Korvah both tested the Stars goalkeeper before Sochima Victor made a big save to deny Sunshine Stars just before the half-time break.
On the hour mark, Rivers United FC forward Matt Gibson Theo was tripped in the opposition penalty area.
Nigerian International Ebube Duru stepped up to score what turned out to be the winning goal.
Sunshine Stars were kept at bay for the remaining part of the game and it was the Port-Harcourt based outfit who almost doubled their lead late-on when a free-kick from Ebube Duru came off the woodwork.
It finished Sunshine Stars 0-1 Rivers United FC, the defending champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League getting their defence off to a best possible start.
Both teams will continue their 2022/2023 NPFL Super Six journey on Monday June 5, 2023.
Rivers United FC will taken on Remo Stars while Sunshine Stars will hope to bounce back from the matchday one loss when they face Bendel Insurance FC.
