OG Anunoby Holds the Key as Knicks Battle Celtics in NBA Playoff Showdown

The New York Knicks are heading into the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs as underdogs, set to face the top-seeded Boston Celtics. While much of the attention is on the stars, Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, it’s OG Anunoby who may prove the difference for New York.

The Celtics dominated the Knicks during the regular season, with Jayson Tatum averaging 33.5 points on 53.5% shooting in their four meetings. That’s where Anunoby steps in. The former Toronto Raptors forward is widely regarded as New York’s best perimeter defender and will be tasked with slowing down Tatum’s scoring.

Anunoby’s defensive assignment is no easy one. Tatum is one of the most dangerous offensive players in the league, and if he gets hot, the Celtics could wrap up the series quickly. But Anunoby has built a reputation as one of the NBA’s top wing defenders, and he’ll need to be at his very best to keep the Knicks’ hopes alive.

New York’s chances may rest heavily on how well Anunoby handles that matchup. If he can disrupt Tatum’s rhythm and limit his impact, it will give the Knicks a real chance to pull off an upset.

Beyond defence, Anunoby will also need to contribute offensively. With Boston likely to target Karl-Anthony Towns in pick-and-rolls, any extra points from Anunoby could make a huge difference.

While the Celtics remain favourites, the presence of OG Anunoby gives the Knicks a fighting chance in what promises to be one of the most exciting series of the playoffs.
