Oliseh Urges Chelle to Stand Firm Ahead of AFCON 2025

Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has advised Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, to be firm in his decisions as the team prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle, who previously led Mali to the quarter-finals at the 2023 tournament, was appointed Nigeria’s coach in January to help rescue their World Cup campaign. However, Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after losing to DR Congo in the play-offs.

Speaking on his football analysis show, Oliseh said he believes the Super Eagles can still perform well at the upcoming AFCON, but stressed that Chelle must stay strong and resist outside influence.

He said the coach must show clear leadership by choosing his team without interference. According to Oliseh, the Super Eagles need a leader the players respect, not one they fear or simply like. He also noted that midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has earned strong respect within the squad.

Oliseh urged Chelle to improve the team’s tactics, saying Nigeria were too open and disorganised in their match against DR Congo. He suggested a more compact and disciplined style of play for the tournament.

He also placed responsibility on the players, especially senior figures. He encouraged the next captain to show strong leadership by contacting teammates early and ensuring everyone arrives in camp on time. Oliseh said winning a tournament requires proper preparation, not just talent.

He added that, whether people agree with Chelle or not, everyone must support him because success will be for the whole country. He also stated that any formation without star striker Victor Osimhen would be difficult to succeed.

Nigeria will compete in Group C at AFCON 2025, where they will face Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. The Super Eagles begin their campaign on 23 December in Fez, Morocco.
