Omeruo speaks ahead of Nigeria game vs Sierra Leone
Super Eagles and Leganes of Spain defender Kenneth Omeruo is optimistic Nigeria will get a win in the game vs Sierra Leone to seal qualification for the 2023 AFCON.
Omeruo was fantastic in the last Super Eagles game, a 0-1 win vs Guinea-Bissau to put Nigeria one point away from sealing qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted by Ivory Coast.
The defender is back among 23-Eagles invited for the AFCON qualification matchday five clash vs Sierra Leone on June 18 in Monrovia.
Omeruo “We are approaching the game with all seriousness, we know how important it is for us to qualify and better to do it with a game to spare so that we can relax and plan for the future.
“Everyone knows what we have to do. We are here to train and to make sure we go there to win.”
On the invitation of four Nigeria Premier Football League players for the game, Omeruo stressed the importance of continuity but hailed their call-up as a welcome development.
He said ” For the national team we need continuity and it’s good to give the younger players opportunities to play and test themselves as well.
“It is a welcome idea and they know they are always welcome.”
When asked about the impact National team engagements during the summer holiday has on players, the defence ace admitted need for rest.
“Of course if you play a whole season and you play up to 30 to 40 games you need time to rest. The national team, we hardly have time to play together, I think it is welcome,” Omeruo concluded.
