Onome Didih Wins Nigeria’s Fifth Gold with Record-Breaking Display in Glasgow
Nigeria’s excellent run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued on Monday as weightlifter Onome Omolola Didih won the country’s fifth gold medal in the women’s 53kg event.
Didih produced a brilliant performance, breaking three Commonwealth Games records on her way to the gold medal.
The Nigerian lifter began with a 93kg snatch, setting a new Commonwealth Games record. She then lifted 113kg in the clean and jerk, another Games record, before finishing with a combined total of 206kg, which also set a new Commonwealth Games record.
Her dominant display saw her finish comfortably ahead of the rest of the field and confirmed Nigeria’s strength in weightlifting at the Games.
India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav won the silver medal with a total lift of 199kg, while Rebeka Groulx of Canada claimed bronze with 178kg.
Didih’s success continues Team Nigeria’s outstanding performance in Glasgow, where the country’s weightlifters have been among the best athletes at the Games.
Her victory takes Nigeria’s gold medal tally to five, adding to an already impressive medal haul as Team Nigeria continues its push for more success in Glasgow.
