Oshoala makes history, becomes first African winner of the UEFA Women’s Champions League
Adds Champions League medal to growing list of personal accolades
Asisat Oshoala was part of the FC Barcelona Femeni side that demolished Chelsea Women FC 4-0 in Gothenburg in the final of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League as they won their first ever Champions League title.
Barcelona Femeni raced into a first minute lead when Melanie Leupolz scored a freak own goal before the same player gave away a contentious penalty which was tucked away by Alexia Putellas in the 14th minute. Aitana Bonmati scored to make it three against a confounded Chelsea side before Caroline Graham Hansen added a fourth following some fine work from Lieke Martens in the 36th minute. Oshoala was substituted on for Jennifer Hermoso after 71 minutes of the encounter.
Oshoala contributed 4 goals in 9 matches for her side in this season’s Champions League as she became the first African winner of the competition ever, adding to her record as the only African finals scorer in the history of the competition when she scored in the final against PSG in 2019. Barcelona are the first Spanish side to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League and have now picked up their first ever Champions League crown to go with their La Liga title.
