Osimhen Explains Why He Rejected Captain’s Armband in Galatasaray Win

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has explained why he refused to take the captain’s armband from İlkay Gündoğan during Galatasaray’s win over Alanyaspor.

The Nigerian forward scored one goal and provided an assist as Galatasaray returned to winning ways at Rams Park on Saturday.

After the match, Osimhen said it did not feel right to accept the armband from the experienced German midfielder. He described Gündoğan as a player he respects deeply and praised his leadership qualities.

“İlkay is someone I respect very much, he is very valuable to me. He is a person known worldwide,” Osimhen said.

“He is both calm and motivating. He is someone we can always talk to. He is very visionary. When he brought me the captain’s armband, it felt strange.”

Osimhen explained that he decided to return the armband so Gündoğan could continue to guide the team on the pitch.

“I gave it back so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He is someone who deserves love,” he added.

The Nigerian striker has been in excellent form since making his move permanent. He has scored 17 goals and provided six assists in 25 matches in all competitions.

Osimhen will now aim to keep up his strong performances as Galatasaray continue their push to retain the Turkish Super Lig title this season.
