Osimhen nets brace as Napoli begin title defence with comeback win

Victor Osimhen was at the double for Napoli as they came from behind to defeat Frosinone 3-1 in their first league match of the 2023-24 season.

Following their successful Scudetto raid last season, the Partenopei started the season with a trip to newly-promoted Frosinone, with Rudi Garcia taking charge of his first match for the champions.

Frosinone stunned the champions, opening the scoring after only seven minutes from the penalty spot through Abdou Harroui. The lead lasted only 17 minutes as Matteo Politano equalised for Napoli in the 24th minute of the encounter.

Italian forward Giacomo Raspadori thought he had put the champions in front in the 35th minute, but his effort was ruled out by the offside flag.

With three minutes left in the half, Osimhen scored his first goal of the season to put his side ahead. The Nigerian striker received a pass from Giovanni Di Lorenzo after fine work from the Napoli captain, and he slammed home a fierce strike that shook the frame of the goal, showing club president Aurelio De Laurentiis why he deserves an improved contract at the club.

Napoli retained control of the game as they looked to press home their advantage against the newly-promoted side.

Osimhen doubled his tally and his side’s lead in the 79th minute when Di Lorenzo played him behind after he beat the offside trap. The 24-year-old showed great composure to roll a fine finish under the goalkeeper, sealing the win for his side.
