Osimhen nets landmark goal, makes history in Napoli win
Napoli moves 18 points clear of second-place Inter Milan
Victor Osimhen scored the 100th goal of his professional career as Napoli overcame Sassuolo 2-0 to further strengthen their title push. He became the first player in Napoli history to score in seven straight matches since the Serie A began to record three points for a win.
Napoli have strolled through the Serie A this season and held a 15-point gap over Inter Milan after Matchday 22 of the competition. The Partenopei paid a visit to Sassuolo looking to extend their lead atop the standings.
Georgian wing whiz Khvicha Kvaratskhelia wasted no time as he scored his tenth goal of a memorable debut season for Napoli after only 14 minutes. The 21-year-old received the ball from defender Matheus Olivera before slaloming past a number of Sassuolo players and slotting his effort into the bottom corner for a brilliant solo goal.
Sassuolo looked to respond within a minute but winger Arnaud Lauriente saw his effort come back off the upright after an impressive effort.
Osimhen struck the upright shortly before the half-hour mark as he raced onto a long ball before seeing his effort cannon off the woodwork. There was to be no such mistake in the 33rd minute, however, as the reigning Player of the Month scored for the seventh game in a row. The in-form striker received a long ball from Amir Rrahmani with his back to goal and two defenders between him and goal. Osimhen turned towards the edge of the box before drilling an effort from an acute angle that snuck past Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli at his near post.
Osimhen has now scored 18 Serie A goals to lead the race for the Capocannoniere this season. The 24-year-old has also now scored 100 goals in his professional career and is the first player in Napoli history to score in seven consecutive league matches.
