Victor Osimhen ended the season with a goal as Napoli defeated relegated Sampdoria 2-0 on the last day of the 2022-23 Serie A season, confirming him as the Capocannoniere for the season.
Having already led the Partenopei to a first league crown in 33 years, the 24-year-old Super Eagles star led the line for the final match of the season.
Both teams cancelled each other out in the opening period of the match with neither side able to break the deadlock.
The match burst into life in the second half when Osimhen latched onto a through ball but was bundled to the ground by Sampdoria defender Nicola Murru. The referee awarded the home side a penalty, and Osimhen stepped up to score his 26th goal of the season in Serie A in the 64th minute.
The league’s leading scorer was substituted off by the manager and was replaced by Argentine striker Giovanni Simeone, who scored a brilliant goal from outside the box in the 85th minute to secure the points.
Napoli ended the season on 90 points, one shy of their record haul of 91 points, and Osimhen ended the season with the league’s Golden Boot/Capocannoniere to go with his Best Striker of the Year award.
