“Osimhen will win African player of the year award if Napoli win scudetto” – Garba Lawal
Former Nigeria-international Garba Lawal has tipped compatriot Victor Osimhen to win the CAF player of the year award if he fires Napoli to the Scudetto.
24-year old Osimhen has already scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, the last vs Eintract Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday Febuary 21, 2023.
With 18-goals in the Italian Serie A for table-topping Napoli to lead the goal-scorers chart, Osimhen has made Garba Lawal proud and the former utility player is sure he can take the CAF player of the year award.
” Osimhen has been making everyone proud and I must commend him for his brilliant effort in putting the name of Nigeria in positive direction,” Lawal told SPORTS BRIEF.
“If he should win the Serie A title and continue scoring, then he will become the next Africa’s best footballer because he is ahead of all competitors now.”
Napoli are cruising towards the Scuddeto this season plus a UEFA Champions League journey boosted by yesterday’s 0-2 round of 16 first leg win at Eintract Frankfurt.
No Nigerian player has won the Africa player of the year award since 1999 when Nwankwo Kanu took the prize.
In 2004 and 2013, Austin Okocha and Mikel Obi came close to winning the award but that run could end with Osimhen’s sterling performances this season.
Sadio Mane is the current CAF player of the year award winner. The Senegalese has endured a rough patch with injuries since his move to Bayern Munich from Liverpool FC.
