Rafael Nadal to face Djokovic in Paris 2024 second round after tough opening match
Rafael Nadal has set up a highly anticipated second-round clash with Novak Djokovic at the Paris 2024 Olympics following a hard-fought victory in his opening singles match.
Nadal, 38, was uncertain about his participation due to a thigh injury but managed to defeat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The 2008 gold medalist demonstrated his resilience, overcoming physical discomfort with his thigh heavily strapped.
The Spaniard, competing at the venue of his record 14 men’s singles titles, began strongly against Fucsovics, winning the first set with ease. However, his form dipped in the second set, allowing Fucsovics to level the match. Nadal’s trademark tenacity shone through in the third set as he secured victory.
Nadal will next face Djokovic, extending their storied rivalry to a 60th encounter. Djokovic, 37, progressed to the second round with a straightforward win over Australia’s Matt Ebden.
Both players are among the greatest in tennis history, boasting a combined total of 46 Grand Slam singles titles, with Djokovic leading 24-22. Nadal has hinted that 2024 could be his final year on tour, but it remains to be seen how long he will continue after battling recent injury issues.
Djokovic, a year younger than Nadal, continues to pursue his quest for Olympic gold, an accolade that has thus far eluded him. The match between these two legends is set to be a highlight of the tournament.
